Roanoke Native & WW II Marine Corps Veteran Shares his Experience

Elwood (“Woody”) Hughes, RHS class of 1943, has fond memories of the farm on Ginger Hill where he and his sister, Martha Evelyn, grew up. He notes that basketball and girls topped his interests in the years leading up to his graduation from Roanoke High School in 1943 – but a stint in the Marine Corps, and deployment to Iwo Jima, was next on the agenda. After college he married Susan Bear: The wedding reception was held at the bride’s home on Main Street Hill (now the Joseph Decuis Bread & Breakfast location), where Susan’s father, the gregarious Robert Bear, vied for the spotlight. Woody’s career as a coach and educator ended a while ago, but his message is now more relevant than ever before….https://wgntv.com/2019/07/05/veteran-adds-name-to-historic-flag-finds-new-purpose-in-sharing-story/
